One-on-One exclusive: Leo Perez
So, it's no surprise that UFC and MMA's have gotten a lot of attention and respect in the last few years. MMA's stand for Mixed Martial Arts. It got this name because it is a combination of different forms of martial arts that people combine and master to make this new sport. One of the more popular martial arts form that these MMA fighters adopt is a stand up form called Muay Thai. What is Muay Thai? Well you're all in for a treat! I have a special one on one interview with Leo Perez, Amateur Muay Thai fighter. We talk about the sport, his training, and even talk about the legalization of MMA's in Ontario. Enjoy!
Hey Leo, thanks for taking the time out of your busy schedule to do this one on one. The readers and I really appreciate it. Lets get right into it
Q: So leo, for those that don’t know, what exactly is Muay Thai?
It’s the natural sport of Thailand. Called the sport of 8 limbs cuz you're using your legs knees elbows punches. Ya it’s a form of kickboxing, but not exactly kickboxing. Kickboxing and mt are similar but at the same time different. Kickboxing is a lot of jumping around, dab dab “oh I cant hurt you” where as muay thai is a lethal sport. Every weapon counts and is aiming for a knockout.
Q: What is it that attracted you to the sport?
Umm like many other people it was the movie “Ong Bak”. After I saw that I wanted to learn about the culture and the sport.
Q: and how long have you been doing it now?
About 2 years
Q: when you first started training, did you know you would take it to the level you are currently at?
When I first started I always envisioned myself wanting to fight so, yes, you can say I did see myself fighting.
Q: How many hours a week would you say you put into training and what does it generally consist of?
I put about 18-20 hours of training a week, when training for fights. That’s about 3 hours a day, 6 days a week. It starts with a run, no less than 5-8k, skipping then about 30 min workout consisting of pushups, situps squats, etc. aimed at warming up the body. Afterwards I hit the bags for 6-8 rounds which is 3 minutes each round so you do the math *laughs*. Then after it depends on the day but we either follow up with bag drills or pad work for another 5 or 6 rounds. After that I usually do a speed set drill and then finish off with 200 sit ups. And that my friend is what a workout consists of.
Q: would you consider this a “full time job” or more of a recreational activity?
Its not a full time job, yet. But at the same time I find it as a mix of both recreational and a full time job because it takes a lot of dedication to stay persistent in training.
Q: wow, sounds intense! Now, over the summer you participated in the TBAS Muay Thai classic and eventually won your bracket. Talk to us about that experience
Well, it was an experience in its own. You know something that I never thought I would’ve done. It was a tough weekend because making it to the finals meant I had 3 fights in 2 days. And ya I just had to keep my eye on the prize and make all the hard training pay off. Also, it was really cool traveling out of the country and participating in an event somewhere else. I got to know a lot of people and it was a fun weekend.
Q: now you’re fresh off a no shins fight in Calgary where you won via unanimous decision improving your amateur record to 4-0. Any idea where or when your next bout may be?
No, just gotta wait and see
Q: recently the UFC and MMA’s have been legalized in Ontario. What are your thoughts on this whole move and the fact that it took this long for it to happen?
Surprised that it took this long. I guess UFC being one of the biggest name brands out there will generate pofits that our province needs and it should help the MMA game in Ontario seeing as fighters won't have to travel all the time and they can fight in province
Q: Would you ever consider dipping into the MMA scene?
Uuuummmm no. I don’t have any plans to do MMA. I would like to learn BJJ but that’s it. I wouldn’t dabble in MMA
Q: Now, you’re a York University graduate with a degree in Environmental studies/minor in geography. Do you see yourself finding a profession in your major or given the opportunity would you rather fight and train professionally?
Given the opportunity I'd rather fight and train professionally. If you have the opportunity to do something you love and get paid for it, how do you lose? I still plan on doing post grad and trying to find a career at the same time but we’ll see how life unfolds
Q: speaking of professionals, as most people know a lot of the professional fighters have nicknames. Do you have a nickname and if so, how did you get to be known as this?
At the gym im know as “Bodman” because at the TBAS tournament, my swag was so stupid I scared a bitch straight donkey. Gucci Maine, BURRRR. And pretty much it’s just because I had apparently a really good swag game *laughs*
Q: sounds intimidating! Speaking of which, obviously in the ring you want to dominate your opponent and be tough. How does this persona relate to the Leo outside of the ring?
The leo outside of the ring is a sweet one of a kind type of guy. Yes, im a lover not a fighter. I only fight in the ring.
Q: quite the opposite eh? You seem to live a very busy life, constantly working and training. How do you find time to have a social life with friends and family?
Its hard -that’s what she said *laughs*. And uhh balancing everything is very difficult. You just gotta make some sacrifices. You cant be a winner at everything.
Q: you seem to have a great work ethic, not too common nowadays. Well Leo, its been great talking to you and learning more about you and the sport. Do you have any words of advice to those who are starting out in Muay Thai or those that are interested in the sport, whether it is to get fit or to one day enter the ring?
You have to find the dedication to stick with it. Yes its gonna be very tough in the beginning but if you push yourself out of the box and pass your limits, you will see results. Big shout outs to Kru Jen, and the whole team at YMT gym. Check us out at www.yorkmuaythai.com and come out! See y’all soon!
Amazing! You’re a real inspiration. Well thanks again for taking the time out of your busy schedule. As a fan and president of your fan club, I can personally tell you we are all looking forward to the next time you enter the ring. Keep training hard and remember, we’re all proud of you! I love you.
Well there you have it. The work Leo puts into his training is definitely unmatched by anyone I have ever met. He is definitely a man of many faces. We all wish him luck in all his future fights and professional career. As long as he keeps working hard, he can accomplish anything he wants! Hope you all enjoyed the interview and stay tuned!

Man that's AWESOME!
Now it feels like most things are not even half as awesome. We're so busy trying to finish school, start our careers, be good friends, and do it all while partying as hard as possible. We get so distracted with life that we don't take the time to appreciate the little things in life. Well this entry is dedicated to a couple things that i once found awesome and that I feel will ALWAYS be awesome no matter what.
The first of these is a video game. You guys remember Ocarina of Time?!?! That is probably the greatest game I have ever played on any console! This game had it all. Action, adventure, love, comedy, and yes even unexpected twists. Man when I found out *spoiler alert* Sheik was actually Zelda in disguise, it blew my mind! They just don't make games like this anymore. Sure there are a ton of good games with unreal graphics but nothing stacks up to Ocarina of Time (OoT).
You know what else, or WHO else, is awesome? Barney Stinson! In fact, he's so awesome that he inspired this post. So for those that don't know, Barney Stinson is a character played by Neil Patrick Harris. He is the ultimate ladies man and makes the show what it is. When Barney is in the room there is never a dull moment and laughs are guaranteed! In fact, Neil Patrick Harris himself is pretty awesome. His role on "Glee" was so badass.
Ya I know, it's not much of a list but OoT has been on my mind for a while now and I just watched a "best of Barney Stinson" video on youtube and I was inspired to write about how awesome they are! What do you guys think will always be awesome no matter what? I'm interested in hearing what you guys got..
Oh and also, my g-friend is pretty damn awesome. She's the most awesome girl I know!

Time Fly's When..
For starters, you guys ever watch the show "Dexter"? My buddy Lui actually got me into it a while back. I watched the first season but stopped. However, this month I got back into it and let me tell you, this is one hell of a show. Lidia (the g-friend for those that don't know) has gotten into it as well and she love's it just as much. Really good show, plenty of twists, and just a damn good show all around.
Also, my parents and sister have been gone this whole month. I've been all alone for the past 2 weeks because my family decided to go to Ecuador without me. Well actually, they wanted me to go but i couldn't get the time off work. You know how they say you don't know what you got till it's gone? Well, believe me you it's been so weird without them here. They come home soon and man i cannot wait for everything to go back to normal.
Although my parents have been gone, I've been lucky enough to have the greatest girlfriend in the world. She's always there for me and even comes over from time to time, cooks dinner, and leaves me lunch for the next day. I'm a pretty lucky guy aren't I? I definitely think so. We're going to Niagara for a weekend, should be an amazing time.
Time sure does fly when you're having fun.. when you're busy with "Dexter".. When your family is gone.. August is done in less then 2 weeks and we all know what that means: SCHOOL!!! Another 8 months of studying, reading, working hard. Only this time, I'm going to be working full time while doing it. Its going to be hard but I got to do it. Wish me luck..
P.S. That running thing... that was an epic fail.......... yyaaaaaaaaa *cough*..

21 day theory
Well, I actually think it makes sense. 21 days may seem long but in reality it's a little less than a month. However, I still think it's long enough to make a routine out of something. After the initial 21 days it'll feel like routine and i won't have to force myself to get up out of bed, put some clothes on and go for a run. I don't know how well this theory might work with quitting something though. Maybe it takes a little more work to quit.
Perhaps this "21 day theory" is actually subjective and depends on the person. For some it may take 7 days or 14 days and for others it may be 30+ days. I guess it really comes down to how bad you want to quit or take something up that determines your own personal "21 days theory". I'm proud to say that ever since I had that chat with Mario I've actually been running everyday. It's only been a week but I'm already starting to see progress in my stamina and to be honest, it feels GREAT!
So now I ask you: How many days is your theory? How long do you think it would take you before you can quit or make something a routine? Have you taken anything up or quit anything recently? I know what I want to take up and I've got my foot in the door. Now it's up to me to keep it on up and believe me, I will definitely keep you all posted!

Summer fun, Summer run?
The second movie is "Inception". This was a GREAT movie. I watched this movie and it literally blew my mind. It's a pretty straight forward movie but at the same time there is so much going on that you can't help but go "WHOA!". Watch Inception, don't even think twice. These are two summer movies that are a must see.
Speaking of summer, I think I wanna start getting into this whole "running" thing. Ever call or message a friend, ask them what they're doing and they say "oh just got in from a run" or "Just going for a run". Man, this seems like the hip thing to do nowadays. So I loaded my ipod with a whack of music and decided I should get into this whole running scene. Good idea? I think so. All the other cool kids are doing it.

From one BIG party to another..
Not gonna lie though, I'm happy Spain won it and all BUT four years ago when Italy won the World Cup the party definitely a lot better. When Italy won St Clair was PACKED with people. It was crazy. I'm not even Italian but man did I have a good time. This year when Spain won, I expected the same, if not more. I was greatly disappointed. Yeah there was a lot of people but no where near as many as four years ago. Oh well, I guess it's because there are a lot more Italy supporters then there are Spain supporters in Toronto.
With that party over, it's time to look forward to the next one: DAN DAN'S BONER JAM WASAGA WEEKEND! Oh man every year for my buddy Dan's birthday we rent a cottage and spend the weekend in wasaga. This year is going to be UNREAL! There are over 60 people coming and we have a whole cottage complex to ourselves! That means we can get as loud as we want without people complaining!!!
Oh man i can't wait. There's going to be a funnel tournament, flip cup, alcohol, dance-offs, alcohol, whacky hats. It's going to be crazy. On top of that my best friend Leo just got back from winning gold in a Muay Thai tournament in Iowa so we have to celebrate that as well! The only part of the weekend that's going to suck is the part where my g-friend can't make it :(:(. I'll try to have fun without you sugar muffin but it'll be hard!
Last year I lost in the semi's during the funnel tournament. This year I'm out for revenge! Dan's birthday is BACK.. With a vengeance! And this time.. it's personal!

To Infinity... And Beyond!
With that being said, I recently watched Toy Story 3. You guys remember Toy Story? Well it's back.. with a vengeance! This one puts an end to the Toy Story franchise and we finally get to see Andy grow up and what happens to his toys. Andy is heading off to college and he must decide what to do with the toys that have filled his life with happiness since he was a little kid. Obviously he wouldn't take the toys to college. Like come on now, who plays with toys in college? *cough cough*. Obviously the toys are scared with what might happen to them and insanity ensues.
My thoughts on this movie.. it was AMAZING. This was probably on of the best movies I have seen in a really long time. As the g-friend said "it was sad, it was funny, it had action, it was sad, it had adventure, it had spanish Buzz". She described it perfectly. I found myself laughing throughout the entire movie and was thoroughly entertained. This movie brought me back to a simpler time when I was playing with toys and made me miss playing with them. Definitely one of the best movies to date.
If you guys get a chance, watch this movie. It may seem like it's a kids movie but it has fun and entertainment for people of all ages. I loved the movie and I truly believe that anyone else who watches it will enjoy just as much as I did. Watch Toy Story 3! Watch it in IMAX 3D!! You will NOT be disappointed. Trust me.

Top Notch Customer Service
About a week ago my lovely g-friend decided to visit me at work on a night that was hella boring. It was a nice treat. She came with her friends and kept me company for a bit. It was good because it helped make the boring night a little more interesting. However, as I was with them, a customer came in and needed help. So I helped the guy out but was very uninterested and gave crap customer service. The dude probably noticed but to be honest, I didn't really care. Along with the guy, my g-friend and her friends also noticed and asked me why I do that. I told them i don't really care and how customer's frustrate me. They told me that maybe I should be a bit nicer to customers. Pft ya right.
Literally the next day I went to the bank and the teller seemed so uninterested and didn't really care much about her job. I remember saying to myself "man if she doesn't want to be here then why doesn't she just quit or something instead of being rude to me, jeeze". Then it hit me; I do the same thing! Do customer's feel the way I just did when I give bad service?! To be honest, I didn't like the feeling at all! I began to feel real bad. For all I know, all the customers that experience my shit service are going back and thinking "why does this guy even work here???".
Since that day, every time I help a customer I keep my experience in mind. No body wants bad costumer service especially if they don't deserve it. We don't go into malls and other retail stores expecting to get bad customer service. Maybe this was all a sign? Perhaps I was meant to receive this terrible service so that I can see the fault of my ways. Had I not had a crappy bank teller, I would know how crappy the people I help feel. It definitely lead to a lot of thinking and contemplating. Perhaps it was time I change my ways. Perhaps it's time I started talking to customers like I was actually interested in what they had to say and give top notch customer service! But then again, I'm waaayyy too lazy for that. I'll just say "fuck it" and stick with what I'm doing. It's just easier..

The Fever is Here!
Italy: So four years ago Italy played some great defensive soccer and proved that defense wins games.. and the world cup. I'll be honest and say I did not expect Italy to make it past the round of 16 let alone the world cup but they did and I was thoroughly impressed. They played some brilliant soccer and bested a surprising France team to win the tournament. This time around I once again have my doubts. There are a lot of familiar names on the roster that played key roles in the last world cup like Buffon, Cannavaro, and Pirlo to name a few. The thing that I find concerning is that this is FOUR years later meaning players that may have been in their late 20's are now in their early 30's and I think it will be hard for them to keep up with teams that have young rising stars. Also, I feel Italy has had a problem with their strikers. I don't feel Italy has had a solid striker since Totti and Del Piero. Italy will definitely make it out of the group stage but once they hit the knock out stages they will find a lot of difficulty. If they repeat I will be THOROUGHLY impressed by this Italy. Remember, only Italy and Brazil have won the world cup back to back, so you never know..
Brazil: The team that is on everybody's tongue. Ask anybody that knows anything about soccer which teams they think have a solid chance of winning the tournament and for sure Brazil will be mentioned. Brazil has won the most world cups and is tied with Germany for the most world cup appearances. There are a lot of people who are doubting this Brazil squad because of the lack of big names. Names such as Ronaldhino, Roberto Carlos, and others that have been a part of Brazil's success are absent this year from the roster which lead people to believe Brazil has lost their touch. What people don't realize is that the eat, sleep and BREATH soccer in Brazil. They may be lacking the big names but this Brazilian squad has so much talent and depth. With Julio Ceasar in net, Kaka manning the mid, and Robinho up top, this squad is definitely in it to win it. After Brazil's poor showing at the last world cup expect them to be hungry and do some serious damage this time around..
Spain: The most under-achieving team. Spain has always had a brilliant squad but have always failed when it counted the most. Up until 2008 Spain has never won a world cup or a euro cup and were a major let down. They finally got that monkey off their backs by winning the euro cup in 2008 and proving to Europe and the world that they are the real deal. This world cup squad boasts some of the greatest talent in the world. In the back there is Puyol, who may be aging but is backed up by Sergio Ramos and Pique. The mid is being held down by players such as Cesc Fabregas and Xavi while up top Fernando Torres and David Villa will take care of the goal scoring. Top that all off with Iker Casillas in net and you have a team that will have no problem winning their group and going real far in this tournament. Expect Spain to make some real damage this time around and prove they are the best squad in the world..
Germany: After loosing 2-0 to Italy in the semi's on home soil last world cup, expect Germany to be HUNGRIER than ever. After teams like Brazil and Spain were eliminated from contention, Germany was arguably the best team left in the tournament. However, two injury time goals by Italy ended their dreams of a world cup on home soil. Germany has always had a strong squad and this year is no different. An injury to Ballack has left him off the squad for the tournament but expect players like Podolski and Schweinsteiger to step it up and get many touches. These players have enough talent to make it feel as if Ballack was never gone. Expect Klose to score many goals and with Lahm in the back, this Germany squad is a serious contender..
Sooooo my prediction.. In a perfect world I would LOVE to see a Brazil vs Spain final. These two teams have great squads and a final with them two in it would be amazing with Spain winning it 2-1. I think the big surprise of the tournament will be Argentina. They had a poor qualifying and barely made it but I think they'll fair well and go deep into the tournament.
Ya this is a long post and I PROMISE they will not all be this long. I just wanted to get my predictions out there. Let me know what you think and what your predictions are.

The Most Interesting Blog in the World
The only problem is I don't know what I'm suppose to do or, most importantly, what people find interesting. So i started asking myself "what is interesting? What are people interested in?". It's funny because what one person may find interesting, another may find extremely boring. I have one friend who finds interest in taking apart cell phones and other little devices then putting them back together. I would much rather have my electronics stay in one piece. Is interesting a good or bad thing? The other day I watched a movie that i found interesting, but definitely not in a good way. Ever hear of a movie called splice? Me and the g-friend watched it the other day and believe me when I say this was not a good movie. The movie had potential but it was a major let down. It was so bad to the point that in parts that were made to stir up emotions people were actually laughing out loud. The g-friend on the other hand found it very amusing that I did not like the movie and feels i have an attraction to "Dren" :S. Not happening.
I couldn't put my finger on what is interesting and nearly decided to abandon my dreams of having the most interesting blog in the world.
But then, when all hope was almost lost, I got a boost of life! I was at work telling someone a story of how I became a local celebrity and they said "Man, you always have these interesting stories". That's when it hit me! I decided what I wanted to do with this blog. Why not write a blog about what goes on in my "interesting" life. I watch a lot of movies, listen to a lot of albums and play many video games, so expect many reviews. I meet a lot of colorful characters so expect stories of strange encounters. Most importantly, I get into many different situations (some of them i can't even believe i got myself into.. people who know me well enough can vouch for that).
So although there may not have been much excitement in this entry, i feel that for my first ever blog, I have provided a nice introduction to what to expect. Believe me, things definitely get a lot more exciting when you live my life. Things are bound to get interesting when you're me.
On a side note: I've been hearing that the book "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Future" by Michael J. Fox is a good read. Can anyone second that? thanks
